Madonna says St. Petersburg holds special meaning for her. She stated: “St Petersburg, Russia was one of the most magical nights on my ‘Sticky & Sweet’ Tour and I’m thrilled that we’ve found the perfect location and ideal environment there for the next Hard Candy Fitness.”

Madonna recently opened a location in Mexico City, Mexico, and also plans to open another facility in Moscow. Additional locations of these unique facilities are planned in Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Australia, Argentina, and Brazil.  The locations have state of the art equipment, lavish locker rooms, climbing walls, yoga studios, biking studios, and a juice bar/cafe.

In four ads, Kelly models Madonna and Lourdes’ new clothing line, showing quite a bit of skin. For Kelly, this is a dream come true to be the face of the Material Girl clothing line, which is only sold in Macy’s stores in the U.S., and is being released in Canada later this month.

Kelly stated “I’m still waiting for someone to pinch me and wake me up,” she told Women’s Wear Daily. She added, “it’s a brand for every woman, not just for young girls.” Osbourne is modeling some of the newest offerings in the line, including shorts and swimwear.

Actress-manqué Madonna felt a light bulb go off when she discovered the blazing trail of Marie “Texas” Guinan, singer, actress, equestrienne, sharpshooter, speakeasy hostess, multi-millionaire, and daredevil. The Material Girl contacted Louise Berliner, who wrote the biography Texas Guinan: Queen of the Nightclubs [University of Texas Press, 1993], and optioned this book for a film, hoping that good material might help bullet-proof her next movie.

“I always had the illusion that I inherited Texas Guinan, like a family heirloom, or that we were somehow related,” noted Louise Berliner, who graduated with honors from Yale. Her grandfather Maxwell E. Lopin was the lawyer who kept prison stripes off Guinan, and who recorded the story of the infamous trial in New York, a manuscript that lit a fire under his granddaughter.

The award-winning author, who now lives in Boston, is flying to New York City on Tuesday August 29, 2006 to see the exhibition “ONSTAGE OUTLAWS: Mae West and Texas Guinan in a Lawless Era” at Village Restaurant [62 West Ninth Street], around the corner from Guinan’s former West Eighth Street duplex.

Also viewing this colorful narrative of New York history on August 29th will be a representative from the office of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer; attorney Michael Pantaleoni, whose niece is the actress Téa Leoni; and other visitors.

“These historical images depict an impressive narrative of America’s political life during the Prohibition Era,” said Arturo Garcia-Costas, Manhattan Community Representative to Congressman Jerrold L. Joseph A. Carter, Sr., Photographer (1917-1980) owned and operated Carter’s Photographic Studio in Asbury Park, New Jersey form the early 1940s until 1980. During this time period, his studio was located at three location in the one square mile sea shore city. In the early 1940′s, he was located at 1136 Springwood Avenue, in the late 40′s through the 1960′s, he operated inside his home at 1521 Bangs Avenue. During the late 1960′s, he opened his first licensed studio at 1207 Springwood Avenue. After the 1970 riots, he relocated to the Morris Building at 715 Mattison Avenue which was destroyed by fire in 1978.

Ironically being spared from destruction in the 1970 Riots during a civil unrest in the city, and before the 1978 fire, his daughter having problems with filing space, removed his negatives that were taken during the early days to make room for new customer’s negatives. There were boxes of 4×5 black and white negatives that were taken during the days when places like Cuba’s Night Club, Berkley Carteret, Carver Hotel, and other entertainment spots, and businesses existed on the West Side.    

His daughter, Madonna Carter Jackson, who was born and raised in Asbury Park, had continued operating Carter’s Studio after his death in 1980, but migrated South on her own adventures. For the past twenty six years, she has made sure that her father’s collections of negatives were protected from the elements of storage, hurricanes, and now the mold and dampness of South Carolina. “I always new that one day my father’s work would be important to the people of Asbury Park. These images are of what I consider our heritage. I want the children of Asbury Park to see that they don’t live in a section of town that is simply remembered as the “dark side of town” as depicted in so many of the historical documentations about Asbury Park.”

The author says, “This book of pictures is not meant to be a historical fact book; I see it as a small portion of a collection of photographs of people, places, and events that validate the positive African American celebrated life in Asbury Park, New Jersey sixty-seven years ago.”
